Men’s underwear has a long and surprisingly interesting history—dating back thousands of years.
Here's a quick timeline of how it evolved:
Ancient Times
3000 BCE – The earliest known men's underwear was the loincloth, worn by ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.
Made from leather or linen, it was simple and functional—just a strip of fabric tied around the waist and between the legs.
Middle Ages (5th–15th Century)
Men wore braies—loose-fitting linen shorts tied at the waist, sometimes extending to the knee.
These were the medieval version of underwear, often worn under tunics and armor.
Renaissance to 1800s
Underwear became tighter and more tailored.
By the 1800s, long johns (full-length undergarments) were common, especially in colder climates.
Early 1900s
1910s–1920s – The modern concept of men’s underwear emerged with one-piece union suits.
Eventually split into undershirts and separate briefs or boxers.
1934: The Birth of Modern Briefs
Cooper Inc. (now Jockey) introduced the Y-front brief in Chicago.
It had a supportive front pouch and no leg covering—revolutionary at the time.
1940s–1980s
Boxer shorts gained popularity after WWII (many soldiers were issued them).
The battle between briefs vs. boxers began, with briefs dominating much of the mid-century.
1990s–Now
Rise of boxer briefs, thanks to brands like Calvin Klein.
Today, men have many choices: trunks, briefs, boxers, jockstraps, thongs, and performance underwear—all with better materials and ergonomic designs.
So, while men have been wearing underwear for over 5,000 years, the styles we recognize today started appearing in the 20th century.
